Work at Home: A Perspective (Hiree's Point of View)

In the present global context, work at home concept has become much popular among the masses. In the coming days also, the same is expected to gain further momentum. Even though, work at home has its own inherent disadvantages, still it may offer several benefits to a home worker. Next few lines are spelt to enumerate a broad sketch of such advantages and disadvantages which a home worker generally extracts from such offer.

Benefits:

1. There is no need for a home worker to leave home and be away from family. Work may be attended from the comfort of own home which otherwise would not have been possible for regular office employment.

2. A Home Worker gets rescue from commuting daily to a distant office place. This leads to a great saving of time and money.

3. Unlike office duty, there is no time bound attendance and fixed schedule for work at home. It may be finished in spare time leisurely after satisfying all other personal and family needs.

4. Official decorum is completely done away with, either in the form of dress code or any decorum of whatsoever. In several cases it results in reduction of expenses also.

5. More time may be spent with family or devoted in other business activity. This may generate additional earnings.

6. Office remuneration is fixed as determined by regulatory authority or sometimes by mutual negotiation between the representatives of employees and the management. Individual worker has no say to augment the wages, whereas, in home based work, every individual can boost up his earnings by devoting more time to the extent possible.

7. Sometimes regular office duties may develop official boredom syndrome by being with the same set of furniture in the same premises and working with same colleagues. But this possibility does not exist for work at home.

8. There is no eagle’s eye of supervision by way of follow up from office boss for work at home.

9. Huge work force which could not secure a permanent office work and even the retired persons, students or housewives also can manage to earn something by work at home.

Drawbacks:

1. Permanent and regular remuneration is not assured in case of work from home. It’s based on no work no pay principle.

2. Superannuation benefits which accumulate to some handful amount are not available for home workers. But this facility exists for regular office workers.

3. Office workers get their remuneration enhanced by bargaining through their union or association. But this is not possible for home workers, since the home based workers has no forum to fight with.

4. Job security for home workers is completely absent as they are simply hired for the particular contract and have no right to claim regular employment.

5. Compensation of any nature either for accident or death can not be claimed by home workers which otherwise would have been available for regular office workers.
