What to Do As You Start Your New Home Based Business
So there you are. You found the perfect, new home based business opportunity that fits you like a glove. What to do next is a challenge for most people starting with their first home based business. Ultimately there isn’t a substantial difference between what you need to do for your new home business and any other type of business.
You need to promote it.
Some people feel uncomfortable “promoting” their business, but they shouldn’t be. The word “promote” simply means “to make known.” When you get started in business, doesn’t it seem important that other people know about it? This is why promoting is so important.
To whom are you going to promote your business? Many people will start with something called a “warm list.” This is a list of people you know. Write down names and how each might benefit from what your new business has to offer or how they might know other people who might benefit from what your new business has to offer. This is an important list and one that many people are often uncomfortable making. It’s not a hit list. If you know people who might benefit from what you have to offer, why not let them know about it? You may know people who don’t seem to need what your new business offers. Write down their names too but spend your time talking to people with more obvious needs first. As you gain confidence you may want to speak to the people “at the end” of your list and see if they know others who you should be talking to.
Before contacting anyone on your warm list, seek coaching from your mentor. If you don’t have previous business, sales or marketing experience, a little bit of role-playing with an experienced mentor will set you more at ease and improve your success when making “real” calls. Even if you do have prior experience, preparing with your mentor will always benefit you.
Sharpening pencils, hanging posters and buying a new office chair will not build your new home based business. The only actions that result in business growth are those that involve you letting others know about what you have to offer. Building, and promoting your business, is a process. The more you work at it, the better you get. The better you get, the more your business will grow. The more your business grows, the more people you help and the more people you help, the more rewards you will receive. All you need to do is get started.
