I've been making a living from the Internet since 1997. It's been awesome to watch how things have evolved and grown over the years. I've been self employed for over 20 years and for the most part, I love it. But the trouble with being "your own boss" is that you are also you own employee and you can end up working just as hard, being a slave to your work, every bit as much as working for someone else. At the ITU TELECOM ASIA event in Busan in September, one of the big attractions at the stands of Korean firms like SK Telecom, KT/KTF and LG Electronics was the home network demos. Everything from the TV and DVR to the washing machine, gas timer and A/C unit was online, and at the center of it all was an IP gateway directing the action. On the widescreen TV was an icon menu for each appliance, all accessible by one remote-control device. And yes, even the fabled "Internet refrigerator" was online. It came with its own screen, from which the same icon menu can be accessed, making the fridge another control point for the home network. It also allowed users to access online information like traffic cams, weather info and video news broadcasts. Users could even leave video messages for other members of the family.

The fact that two of the companies demonstrating home networks were service providers was no coincidence. Each home network can also be accessed via PCs and mobile phones, with the same icon menu seen on the TV or fridge screen at home. This not only allows users to check up on their homes (via Web cams and status reports for each appliance), but also allows the home net to send alerts out to the user when something goes out of whack.

That's one vision of the home network scenario, and there are plenty of others. And while it all sounds future-techy, in reality the technology is already here.

Which is why vendors and service providers are moving on the home networking front. Home networking is increasingly being seen by operators like SKT, KT, Chungwha and others as a logical step up the value chain for their broadband customers. A number of broadband operators in the US and Canada have been taking that step for over a year, and Asia--the biggest broadband market--is closing in.

In June this year, the Korea Home Network Forum, Japan's Echonet (Energy Conservation & Homecare Network) Consortium and China's IGRS (Intelligent Grouping & Resource Sharing) agreed to share their advancements in home networking technology and promote the developed standards internationally, KT Corp is currently trialing a home networking service in a project with Samsung Corp's Housing Development Group in Seoul, where KT is providing 20o households with home network services, including interactive digital broadcasting, home automation, home security, health-care services such as remote video medical consultation, and infotainment services such as VOD, Internet broadcasting and network gaming. Intel has been busy working on the "digital borne," partnering with companies like Microsoft for digital media apps and working with service providers like Chunghwa Telecom, which plans to launch digital home solutions for broadband customers by the end of this year.

Even regulators are working to promote digital homes. Korea's Ministry of Information and Communications, for example, has set a target of connecting 10 million households through home networking systems by 2007, and has allocated 882.8 billion won ($770.2 million) toward development and standardization of home networking technology.

Consequently, home networking is becoming the next focal point for big-money hype. Certainly analysts are impressed. Instat/MDR says broadband sharing and a growing interest in entertainment networking will drive the home-networking equipment market from $8.3 billion this year to $17.1 billion by 2008. And while most of the action is in North America now (accounting for 46% of home network gear sales worldwide), Asia is expected to become the regional leader in home networking by 2008, accounting for 36% of the market as North America drops to 34%. Gartner is even more upbeat, putting the world home networking market at $106.2 billion in 2010. IDC expects the worldwide installed base of home networks to grow from 37 million in 2003 to nearly 111 million in 2008.

The catch--you knew there was one--is that while the technology is here, the standards aren't. Not all of them, anyway. Integration and interoperability remain big snarls in assembling the home network and bridging several network layers, from the network itself to the devices, the interfaces and, in particular, the content (three words: digital rights management). And while some have recently been sorted and others will be in the near future, the other catch (and you knew there would be another one) lies in getting users to comprehend all these new apps and--more importantly --pay for them.

The World Basic Information Library (WBIL) Program enables Reserve Component (RC) personnel of all services, military specialties and ranks to perform research in support of the Intelligence Community (IC) and military command requirements through telecommuting--working at a time and place of their choosing. The WBIL Program was conceived in 1996 by Mr. Ed Waller then of the IC Open Source Program Office (COSPO) which developed and proved the concept, and then asked the Foreign Military Studies Office (FMSO) to manage the personnel, production, and telecommunications architecture. The founding premise was to better engage and utilize the civilian acquired skills of members of the Reserve Component (RC), especially members of the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), by engaging them regardless of branch of service, military skills, rank or specialty, in research that supports the IC's requirements. Since its inception the WBIL program has been and remains a joint program with participants from all military services, and presently has RC, Active Component (AC), and retiree members participating as well as a group of contracted researchers--all supporting IC and unit requirements.

The ability to perform this work requires only that one have access to a computer with Internet access. All other required materials and software are provided by the FMSO office in conjunction with the Intelink Management Office which provides access to the Open Source Information System (OSIS) network. Research, collection, and archiving documents via the WBIL program are done at a time and place of the individual's choosing. That can be from a Reserve center, the individual's home or place of work, or at a Joint Reserve Intelligence Center (JRIC). The Internet is a means of contributing researched material to the WBIL, as well as for accessing the Library. The Internet is only one source of information to support the IC requirements. As long as source material can be converted to an electronic format it can be archived into the WBIL. The Internet is a principal source for the WBIL program only because of its ease in accessing and archiving.

The WBIL is hosted on the OSIS network and replicated on the Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNET) and the Joint Worlddwide Intelligence Communications System (JWICS). To access the OSIS virtual private network (VPN) one requests an account from the unit's "OSIS Trusted Agent" or directly from the IMO/OSIS [accounts@intelink. gov], configures the computer, and then logs on. For personnel working in the WBIL program the FMSO provides initial training material to walk a person through the process of getting OSIS access, OS information research, use of the Pathfinder software, and the methods and standards for archiving material into the WBIL. More advanced training is provided by the Open Source Information Research and Analysis (OSIRA) course described below.

The WBIL program researchers address requirements that are based upon a "sanitized" or unclassified version of the IC's requirements. Subject areas range from anthropology and culture to economics, politics, government, military, biographies, and science and technology as well as all of the emerging or transnational threats such as terrorism, drug trafficking, and information operations. Additionally, many commands and agencies make specific requests of the WBIL Program for information to support their requirements which they are not able to fulfill due to a lack of personnel or competing priorities.

The WBIL program uses intuitive and highly "user friendly" commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software to collect, catalog, and archive source documents in their entirety, thus the use of the term "library" rather than database or portal. In order to ensure that the source document remains accessible to the analyst, the WBIL archives the full original document--text, imagery, sound and video--that addresses the requirement. In that way although the original Internet website may disappear, the WBIL will retain the information for perpetual use by the IC.

An individual, whether in an intelligence organization or not, accesses the WBIL by using the Pathfinder analytic suite of software. This version of Pathfinder is hosted by the FMSO on its OSIS website and is replicated on SIPRNET and JWICS by the Ground Intelligence Support Activity (GISA) and National Ground Intelligence Center (NGIC). Pathfinder permits the user to not only search and retrieve source material but also to support their analytical interests via tools such as map plotting geo-referenced materials, and conduct link analysis, establish personal databases, and perform temporal and matrix analyses. For the uncleared person this utilization of Pathfinder is an additional training and the NORTHCOM detachment developed a close, cooperative arrangement around the exploitation of open source information. NORTHCOM appreciated the advantages derived from the close association between its detachment and the FMSO analysts and assisted in the relocation and expansion of the Fort Leavenworth JRIC into its new, three-story facility with enhanced connectivity, thanks to the support of the Joint Reserve Intelligence Program (JRIP). This expanded facility has created opportunities for more reserve intelligence units to drill at the JRIC and other agencies to locate there. Thanks to the team's efforts, FMSO has also forged productive partnerships in the area of OSINT with the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)--now the Open Source Center--and the Border Patrol's Field Intelligence Center (BORFIC). American Demographics teamed up with Redlands, Calif.-based ESRI Business Information Solutions to find out. The accompanying map, based on consumer spending data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, reveals high concentrations of spending on home furnishings in major metro areas and their suburbs - extending along the Washington, D.C., to Boston corridor in the east, and from San Diego up to the Bay Area on the west coast. The counties in our PopUpdates are among the top 25 based on how much the average household spends on gussying up its home. The most extravagant buyers in 2001 hailed from Fairfax County, Va., where the home furnishings bill averaged $3,935 per household. Big spenders can also be found in the inland enclaves of Fayette County, Ga., just outside Atlanta, and Pitkin County, Colo., which is home to Aspen, as well as in the farthest reaches of the country, such as the Dillingham census area in Alaska.

In 2001, America's 105 million households shelled out some $425 billion to spiff up their homes, up 28 percent from just five years earlier. Motorola Inc. announced this week that Vonage Holdings Corp., a major provider of broadband telephone service, will begin offering the Motorola VT2442 voice-over-IP gateway to customers, making it easier to incorporate broadband telephone service into their home network.

"We've been working with Vonage for over two years, so there are a large number of Motorola voice gateways already being used by Vonage customers," Jeff Walker, senior director of marketing at Motorola, told Ziff Davis Internet News.

"This new agreement is extending our relationship beyond basic internal adapters, now giving Vonage customers a voice gateway that provides extensive networking features and advanced capabilities."

The VT2442 is part of a range of products that Motorola has created for VOIP providers. The device uses Texas Instruments' TNETV1060 VOIP gateway chip set to enhance the quality and feature offerings presented to customers who use Vonage's broadband telephone service. Customers can share high-speed Internet connections around the house and access Vonage's telephone services from one device.

The VT2442 supports up to two lines of telephone service and offers call waiting, call forwarding and caller ID. In addition, the device includes a home network router with four Ethernet ports that can be used to connect computers and gaming consoles, as well as a firewall for Internet security.

Currently, the supply agreement between Motorola and Vonage for the VT2442 VOIP gateway is exclusive. However, since the device is relatively new, there is a possibility that the company will sell the VT2442 through other channels in the future as well, according to a representative from Motorola.

Gigabyte-brained entrepreneurs seeking to tap foreign markets have many tools at their disposal. Steve Baloff, a general partner of Advanced Technology Ventures in Palo Alto, California, suggests keeping an eye on ever-improving Web-based architecture. Set hardware is another option for companies wanting to make an international name for themselves by developing a new technological concept.

Introducing technology to a foreign market is exactly the path Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of Burlington, Massachusetts-based VIP Calling, decided to take when he and Gordon VanderBrug founded their company in 1996. VIP Calling created software that allows it to transfer calls to a public telephone network and offer substantially cheaper rates than traditional carriers. In 1997, the company began using that technology to route international long-distance calls over the Internet. Now it completes calls for major U.S. carriers and has established partnerships throughout Asia and Latin America, as well as offices in China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, California, New Jersey and Texas. Gneezy's company handled more than 10 million minutes of calls in May alone.

"The hardest part of getting started was convincing companies our technology worked," says Gneezy, 41. "There was a question of whether Internet telephony could deliver the quality of the traditional voice connection. We proved it could."

But developing new technology is only one path to success. Another is to improve an existing mouse trap, which is what Stampede Technologies Inc. president and CEO Gordon Dorworth did when he created TurboGold for Lotus Notes. The 46 year-old has since created dial-up network software designed to provide faster access for laptop computers - and sends more than 25 percent of his products overseas.

If you think you're ready to head into a foreign market, proceed with caution. That way you can avoid common mistakes, such as rushing in before gaining enough experience at home, underestimating how much money it will take, and attempting to develop products for unfamiliar industries.

Wouldn't it be fabulous if nursing homes were paid for empty beds rather than being reimbursed for filled ones?" asks Cheryl Field, MSN, RN, CRRN, director of Clinical and Reimbursement Services at LTCQ, Inc., in Lexington, Massachusetts. "If that were the case, they'd do better at keeping people well in the community."

Obviously, the reimbursement system will never change that dramatically. But the possibility of not only getting people well, but keeping them that way, does exist in the subacute care community. The best place to start, says Field and others in the industry, is through the introduction of wellness programs.

Such programs are indeed beginning to spring up in subacute facilities throughout the United States, offering a holistic approach to getting short-term residents back on their feet and keeping them from coming back to the SNF. But unlike restorative programs, in which the goal is to maintain a long-term care resident's highest level of function, wellness programs are meant to wean subacute patients away from their reliance on facility staff and toward self-reliant living at home.

Kathleen Sullivan, RN, MN, CS, CRRN, is assistant director of nurses at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare in Nashua, New Hampshire, a 300-bed facility with 55 beds licensed for skilled subacute care. As part of the Kindred Healthcare chain, Greenbriar uses the Care Map, a proprietary tool that effects a seamless transition from hospital to Greenbriar to home (figure). "As they come through our doors, we have two sets of goals in mind: short-term and long-term," says Sullivan. "For the short term, we have to make sure that we are able to pick them up from the hospital level of care--be it IV therapy, PT, or whatever was going on at the hospital--and then continue treatment. As far as long-term goals, we sit down with the patient, family members, case manager, and a representative from nursing to construct the Care Map. We plan out what we need to do to get patients back to their prior level of function. We also need to ask some basic questions, such as 'How many steps are there to get into the house?' Knowing what questions to ask is a big thing."

There was never a question as to whether Mrs. Thomas was going to go right home after her discharge from the hospital. She'd been admitted with a diagnosis of cellulitis, which developed after she badly cut her lower left leg while closing a car door. She was responding well to IV antibiotics and would have been able to return home with the help of visiting nurse services, which would continue to oversee therapy. But Mrs. Thomas would not allow "strangers" into her home, plus she needed help with wound care. Neither of these conditions would have qualified her for Medicare benefits to cover her stay at Greenbriar, but the fact that she suffered from congestive heart failure did. Because she was spending so much time in bed, muscle weakness was setting in and fluid was gathering in her legs.

Once at Greenbriar, Mrs. Thomas received PT five days a week. They encouraged her to be up and about for specific periods throughout the day. When she was in her room, her legs were elevated to promote circulation and healing.

All was well until about day 14, when she became agitated, saying that she "needed to take care of some business." She fully intended to leave against medical advice. And that's where the Care Map kicked in. Adjustments were made, and Greenbriar's staff worked with Mrs. Thomas so that she felt free to address her business, leaving her confident that she remained in charge of her life. As a result, when she was discharged after nearly a six-week stay, she was able to resume her life where she had left off. She'd had sufficient time to practice climbing stairs at Greenbriar, was better able to understand her medication schedule, and was proficient at the minimal self-care her wound still needed after practicing with the nursing staff.

Had she gone home when she wanted to, Mrs. Thomas could have injured herself as she tried to cope alone, possibly ending up back at the hospital. The Care Map--the wellness component of her care plan--was her safety net.

"All in all, without the Care Map, somebody could really fail badly from either lack of preparation or from being discharged from subacute too quickly," says Sullivan. "In the dollars and cents of it all, if this is done correctly, the patient won't go back to the hospital, which is a much larger daily cost."

"We used to call it a phaseout, as in 'let's phase us out of their lives,'" notes Field. But now the push is for more than just mobility--it's for the promotion of restored independence. "Basically we're teaching patients how to seek out the services they need or acquire their medicine on their own so we can make sure they've learned these new behaviors and can maintain and use these new skills at home." Field also suggests that, for example, as a subacute patient nears the end of her stay, she have her own bedspread at the facility so that the week before discharge, she can practice making her own bed: "If she's going to trip on her bedspread, let her do it here so we can teach her how to avoid it. The bottom line is that right now, the way things are, we're creating dependent people. We should encourage them to do things for themselves a week before they leave instead of returning home and having problems.

Megan Fong looked ahead to college, she hoped to find an internship or a summer job in the entertainment industry. She decided to look online. Fong noticed an ad on craigslist (www.craigslist.org), a Web site featuring job openings from cities around the country. ManiaTV!--a new Internet television network--was seeking on-air personalities. Fong responded immediately. The next thing she knew, she was called in for an audition. After several more auditions, she landed a job as one of the network's first CJs (cyberjockeys).

Now an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Denver, Fong hosts two music-video shows and a spoof of the online dating scene on ManiaTV! while carrying a full course load. "My job is amazing," she says. "I am getting hands-on experience, plus it's so much fun being in front of the camera and performing for others."

For Fong, using the Internet was the key to finding a great job. "You can find almost anything that you'd like to do online," she says. "And you can respond to a bunch of ads online in the time it takes to mail your resume to just a few places."

Maybe you'd like to learn more about careers worth pursuing in the future. Or perhaps you want to compare salaries and educational requirements for different fields or land a part-time job or an internship. "Many of the things you need to find and get a job are on the Internet these days," says Tim Driver, senior vice president of Salary.com. "You can search job postings, research companies, send in applications, and find out how much you should be paid."

Driver notes that the Internet offers particularly exciting possibilities for summer employment. "Teens are no longer confined to working the register at the supermarket down the street or slinging chowder at the local clam shack," he says. "You can now apply for a job at a national park in Montana from a computer in Boston."

The first step in finding career information online is to have a good idea of what you are looking for. Before using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo, take a few minutes to jot down notes on just what you're seeking.

"When using search engines, be very specific in your wording," says Brenda Fabian, director of the Center for Career Services at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. For example, if you are looking for a job, use specific terms in your research. "Don't just type in jobs," Fabian recommends. "Instead, enter retail jobs Philadelphia or summer resort employment. You'll have less information to sort through."

If you're interested in a specific employer, you can either type in the company's name followed by .com (if it is a for-profit company) or .org (if it is a nonprofit organization) or conduct a Web search using the company's name. To explore job opportunities with Kroger grocery stores, for example, you could guess that its URL is www.kroger.com (it is) or conduct a basic Web search with Kroger as the search term. Are you searching for general information about a career as an accountant? Key in accounting and career to begin your quest for information.

Many universities have career centers with useful links to career development sites. Those sites can be great starting points for research.

Although organizations' Web site designs vary, you'll find common elements. Most sites have sections titled Employment, Jobs, or Careers. Job listings and career information can sometimes be found in the About Us section on a company's or an association's home page.

* How do I know whether a site's information is reliable?

In navigating the online world, use caution. The Internet has a wealth of information, but not all of it is helpful or accurate. "Anyone can put just about anything on the Web, even completely false information," says Susan Cheng, a library director at DeVry University. "So be sure to evaluate sites carefully before relying on them."

Here are a few strategies you can use to evaluate a Web site.

Determine who is responsible for the site. Information provided by a business or a professional organization is generally more reliable than what you'll find on someone's personal Web site. Sites offered by government agencies (.gov), nonprofit associations (.org), and educational institutions (.edu) tend to be trustworthy. One useful government site is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, published annually by the U.S. Department of Labor (www.bls.gov/oco). It provides overviews of hundreds of occupations, including job roles, qualifications, and salary information.

Know the site's purpose. Many business sites (.com) are perfectly legitimate and provide valuable career information. However, a few may be more interested in trying to sell something (such as career development books or resume-writing services). So use the same care you would in evaluating any type of advertising. When considering buying a new home, it is a good idea to prioritize your needs and then see if the chosen location addresses your needs properly. Each home that you see will have its own charms. You may at times need to weigh the property's charms against common sense. However, to buy a new home, the first thing to be done is to determine the purpose that this home is supposed to serve, such as whether it is bought as an investment property or primary residence or as a vacation home. If your purpose is clear it will help you decide if the property is right for you.

Next, you need to research the community. See if all your major requirements are fulfilled. Take a look at factors like proximity to workplace, ample playing space for kids, noise level, proximity to stores and shopping, and school districts. You would also need to take into consideration all the adjacent properties, zoning, power lines, privacy, streetscape, the neighborhood and the like.

When buying a new home, you could get the assistance of an agent, look at an online home search, or go house hunting on your own. Many people find that going into a home purchase with representation is a better option, as an agent would have the advantage of symmetric information and prevalent prices.

At the same time, buying a house is not just about the price tag on your home. Subdivision Living - Who Is Responsible?

A conventional subdivision is the traditional method of building and conveying homes and lots that traces its roots in America back to the late 1800s. A conventional subdivision is different from a common interest subdivision (as discussed on page 6) in that the individual owners within the subdivision own only their interest in the property and do not share an ownership interest with other owners within the subdivision. Generally speaking, the streets, utilities, drainage systems, and sidewalks become the property of the city or county, or utility company as applicable.

The maintenance responsibilities of a homeowner in a conventional subdivision begin at the front property line, normally from the back of the city sidewalk and run to the property lines along the side yards and back yard. Sometimes, the city requires that the owners maintain the sidewalk in front of their house, even though they do not own it. There is no homeowners association, and it is up to the individual homeowner to maintain his or her own property.

In recent years, a “hybrid” type of subdivision has become a popular tool in land planning. It is called the “diminimus planned unit development” or DPUD. Like the conventional subdivision, the homeowner living in a DPUD receives a deed to his or her lot and has individual maintenance responsibility for the house. On the other hand, like a common interest subdivision, there is a homeowners’ association to manage and maintain a smaller number of subdivision components that may include streets, recreation centers, landscaped areas, and security gates.

If Your Home is Located in a Common Interest Subdivision

Common interest subdivisions are often master planned communities with common areas consisting of townhouses or condominiums (flats) or a combination of both designs. The method by which title to the homeowner is conveyed can be complex and lengthy and is beyond the scope of this Manual. However, as a general rule, the homeowner receives individual title to some portion of the building and a fractional ownership interest in the rest of the project including the landscaped areas, streets, swimming pool, and recreation facilities. The responsibility for maintenance of the common areas, including the exterior maintenance of the buildings, falls to a homeowners association (HOA) whose board members are elected by the individual owners within the community. The responsibility for maintenance inside the townhouse or condominium generally falls to the individual owner. This is often called an “airspace” responsibility or a “paint-to-paint” responsibility.

If the buildings within the community contain decks, balconies and patios, there is a good likelihood that these architectural features are described as restricted common areas. External storage facilities may also receive a similar designation. Restricted common area means that this particular area, while remaining under the control of the HOA, is to be used exclusively by the occupants of the condominium or townhouse.

The responsibilities for maintenance of individual areas, common areas, and restricted common areas, are spelled out in a document called the Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CC&Rs). The CC&Rs are recorded on your title to the property, and every homeowner receives a copy of the CC&Rs at the time of purchase. While the CC&Rs are a legal document, it is important that each homeowner become familiar with their rights and responsibilities as a member of a community association.

Who’s Responsible?

Many persons who purchase a home within a townhouse or condominium community mistakenly believe that “someone else” is going to take care of all the cleaning, maintenance, and repairs for the entire project. However, it should be noted that the “someone else” responsible for nearly all of these items is a board of directors comprised of fellow homeowners. Like a small form of government, the board of the homeowners association (HOA) makes important decisions regarding monthly homeowner assessments, budgets, rules of conduct and the employment of maintenance and management companies. These decisions have a direct effect upon the quality of life and preservation of values within the community.

For maintenance responsibilities of individual owners inside their own home, the following basic maintenance guidelines are recommended:

Manufactured Products: Follow the maintenance recommendations found on pages 20 – 98 of this Manual. You may also have been given maintenance and care instructions on manufactured products within your house for such items as fireplaces, water heaters, kitchen appliances, carpet, and hardwood flooring, to name a few. Take the time to learn and apply these instructions;

Plumbing Fixtures: Keep plumbing fixture drains clean and free flowing. Use drain cleansers on a 30-day to 6 month interval. Do not put drain cleaners into a garbage disposer, the cutting blades may become corroded;

Ventilation: Use the vent fan or open a window when bathing or showering to reduce the likelihood of mold and mildew. Wipe shower stalls and tub enclosures after use to remove excess moisture. Let the fan run for 15 minutes after bathing or showering or leave a window open (if available) to allow the room to dry. If water has spilled over the outside of the tub, wipe it up immediately. The seam between the tub base or shower pan and floor can be vulnerable to leaking and requires periodic caulking;

Balconies and Decks: Avoid placing potted plants directly on the surface of a deck or balcony. Place plastic or decay resistant blocks (such as redwood) to keep the pot off the surface of the deck. This will allow air to circulate and allow the surface of the deck to dry completely. Use a saucer under the pot and avoid overwatering. Move pots and furniture often so that they do not remain in one location permanently. Avoid placing potted plants on the top of the deck railing. The deck railing was not made for this use and the possibility of pots falling off creates a hazard. Because decks, balconies and patios are normally restricted spaces and enclosed by fences or railings, it is important for each homeowner to monitor the condition of these surfaces. Conditions such as wobbling railings, nails pulling loose, cracks in surfaces, and rotting wood should be reported to the management company representative or a member of the board of directors.

Where are the profits?

There's no denying that revenue from film print services is declining. Consumers are increasingly using digital cameras and that activity will only increase. As digital imaging is adopted by the largest-volume picture-takers--women with children--the traditional print profit pool will decline even more.

f your information technology business has been growing for several years, it may be time to take the next step - a huge stride into another country. Why? The industry is ripening all over the globe. According to the American Electronics Association, U.S. IT exports totaled more than $165 billion last year.

Of that bonanza, Canada and Mexico were the largest individual buyers, accounting for about $25.9 billion and $18.3 billion, respectively. Japan purchased some $15 billion-worth, and the 15 members of the European Union spent a collective $40.6 billion.

Options on where to find good people and set up shop are also limitless. A number of experts point to Israel for the former and Scotland for the latter. Israel offers a lot of talent courtesy of defense department spinoffs and Russian immigrants. Scotland, meanwhile, has set up a "Silicon Glen" to attract high-tech businesses to its lush countryside.

Gigabyte-brained entrepreneurs seeking to tap foreign markets have many tools at their disposal. Steve Baloff, a general partner of Advanced Technology Ventures in Palo Alto, California, suggests keeping an eye on ever-improving Web-based architecture. Set hardware is another option for companies wanting to make an international name for themselves by developing a new technological concept.

Introducing technology to a foreign market is exactly the path Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of Burlington, Massachusetts-based VIP Calling, decided to take when he and Gordon VanderBrug founded their company in 1996. VIP Calling created software that allows it to transfer calls to a public telephone network and offer substantially cheaper rates than traditional carriers. In 1997, the company began using that technology to route international long-distance calls over the Internet. Now it completes calls for major U.S. carriers and has established partnerships throughout Asia and Latin America, as well as offices in China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, California, New Jersey and Texas. Gneezy's company handled more than 10 million minutes of calls in May alone.

"The hardest part of getting started was convincing companies our technology worked," says Gneezy, 41. "There was a question of whether Internet telephony could deliver the quality of the traditional voice connection. We proved it could."

But developing new technology is only one path to success. Another is to improve an existing mouse trap, which is what Stampede Technologies Inc. president and CEO Gordon Dorworth did when he created TurboGold for Lotus Notes. The 46 year-old has since created dial-up network software designed to provide faster access for laptop computers - and sends more than 25 percent of his products overseas.

If you think you're ready to head into a foreign market, proceed with caution. That way you can avoid common mistakes, such as rushing in before gaining enough experience at home, underestimating how much money it will take, and attempting to develop products for unfamiliar industries.

Information technology consultant Harry Sello says IT entrepreneurs going global should start the process with these steps:

1. "Find someone abroad with whom you can form a partnership," says Sello, president of Harry Sello & Associates, a Menlo Park, California, firm that helps business owners penetrate foreign markets. "Regardless of what type of partnership you create, find one that can add value to your product for the marketplace you're going into. That might mean a company that makes the product work in a particular language or within a country's engineering and cultural habits. That can also create tariff breaks by enabling you to enter that market as a local company rather than an American one."

2. Head overseas and attend the most specialized trade shows you can find. "Use them to hunt for partners and find out everything you can about your industry," says Sello.

3. When you go to a trade show, have your product ready for sale. "Trade shows have a much higher status [overseas] than they do in the United States," Sello says. "Europeans in particular expect you to come with a final product. They're suspicious of Americans who use the show as a barometer to gauge reaction to a product that's still being refined. Entrepreneurs abroad should be ready to make on-the-spot sales."

Here's how you can live, work and make money under one roof.

Every ten seconds, somebody starts a new home-based business in the United States. As if this statistic - courtesy of BIS Strategy Decisions - wasn't striking enough, the trend is accelerating: In the past 14 years alone, the number of home-based workers has grown from six million to 32 million - with no slowdown in sight.

With home-based workers earning roughly double the average salaried worker's annual wages of $25,000, it's no wonder that more and more folks are joining the ranks of the self-employed.

In fact, an estimated 8,493 new home shops open up every day. Roughly three out of four will still be in business five years from now, according to Paul and Sarah Edwards, authors of Working From Home: Everything You Need To Know About Living And Working Under The Same Roof (Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam, New York, $15.95). If you're seriously considering starting your own home-based business, various indicators suggest that you may be riding the wave of the future.

Once based on an industrial economy, the United States is now driven by an information-and-service economy. Over the past decade, Fortune 500 companies have laid off 4.4 million workers, and smaller companies have steadily reduced their workforces.

As corporations continue to downsize, reorganize, merge and purge, many professionals will search for ways to take control of their careers. TRADE SECRETS: WORKS OF ART

FOR DISPLAY AND WEAR

Realizing that a home-based business would give her the creative and financial freedom she desired, Marcia Duvall took the concept of a "home salon" - popular in Europe in the early 20s and 30s - and established Trade Secrets in 1992. The former manager for Circles Salon Boutique in Washington, D.C., and 20-year retail industry veteran aspired to go beyond designing a home-based clothing boutique that was the equivalent of just a rack in someone's living room.

Rather, Trade Secrets is a fascinating showplace where merchandise is displayed on the walls like fine works of art on exhibition. The difference is that everything is for sale, with prices ranging anywhere from $10 for a necklace to $150 for a Gabardine wool coat.

Trade Secrets offers an array of clothing, accessories and collectibles. Peruse Duvall's one-bedroom apartment and you'll see how she has weaved textiles, mud cloth, sculptures and fashions into a unique design of colors and textures.

As the sole entity of Trade Secrets, the 40-year-old Duvall is buyer, fashion coordinator, systems administrator, customer relations and public relations expert. Working on a by invitation or appointment only basis, the savvy entrepreneur has a stable clientele of 75 to 100 buyers. Her four seasonal salon shows, plus at least two holiday events per year, draw a crowd of about 300.

Duvall believes in marketing a total package. Past shows have had provocative themes, for instance, the theme for last February's extravaganza was "black women and empowerment." The previous year she displayed various African sculpture from the Benin Kingdom. Duvall hopes the themed shows set a positive tone for her customers.

Her handiwork doesn't end there. Duvall has brought the salon to potential buyers outside the capital. Traveling several times during the year, she recreates her concept in other homes, breaking down dining rooms and turning them into clothing boutiques for the day. "This is a good way for me to establish markets outside of the area," she explains, "without having to operate store-fronts in those places."

Starting out, Duvall had a hard time getting a wholesale license. The idea of a home clothing salon may have had backing across the seas, but it had no real model in the United States. After filing tons of paperwork and submitting cost projections, the licensing bureau could not envision the nature of the operation and rejected Duvall's request.

"Without a wholesale license, I was unable to attend major boutique shows those first couple of months," she says. After dipping into her personal savings - taking out $7,500 for operating capital - the resourceful entrepreneur beat the streets or stores of New York to obtain the stylish merchandise for her first show.

Eventually, Duvall had to recruit someone to troubleshoot the license for her. "It wasn't time-effective for me to spend two to three hours a day sitting in an office, waiting just to talk to someone," she explains. It took more than 60 days and half a dozen visits before Duvall was officially licensed.

Brazil's information technology industry faces a quandary: Its world-class skills aren't known in most of the world. Despite boasting state-of-the-art systems and software providers, the country has not been able to export, its know-bow or products to many markets beyond its vast borders.

Instead, it's playing catch-up as the bulk of the world's information technology outsourcing goes to rivals in India and other developing nations. "Brazil is a hidden gem in the world of information technology," says Rodrigo Leite, business director for Eccelera Gestao de Participacoes Societarias, a Sao Paulo venture-capital company that invests in technology companies throughout Latin America. "There are companies here with a lot of potential but, historically, they have not been able to export."

Brazilian companies by necessity have developed some of the most advanced software in the world in recent decades. An unstable economy and runaway inflation meant Brazilian banks needed sophisticated software merely to keep up with the value of their assets. Local developers arose to supply them and in the process have garnered enough skills to create complex systems ranging from security and encryption applications to telecommunications and e-government platforms. The country, for instance, boasts one of the most widely used online income-tax programs on the planet.

But what has traditionally been a plus for Brazil's info-tech sector--the size and potential of its home market--has also hindered its ability to expand on a global scale. Sales growth fueled by domestic demand has kept Brazilian technology groups from learning how to sell their wares in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere.

The Brazilian tech sector last year generated revenues of nearly US$8 billion, according to the Society for the Promotion of Excellence in Brazilian Software, a Sao Paulo industry group. But only about $100 million of that came from exports.

"It's peanuts given the size of the market," says Antonio Carlos Gil, chief executive of CPM, a software and systems developer in Sao Paulo and president of the Brazilian Association of Software and Service Exporting Companies, a recently formed industry group that is working on ways to better promote the sector abroad.

"Companies didn't learn to export in Brazil because of the size of demand here," says Gil. "You didn't look for growth abroad because you had it in your own backyard."

But domestic growth can only go so far. As they began to look toward other markets in recent years, Brazilian companies realized they had lost valuable time.

So far efforts to export Brazilian software have been piecemeal forays into other markets by individual companies, largely without success. Small software developers, when trying to sell their products in the United States and western Europe, found they were no match for the distribution and marketing might of established tech multinationals.

As they sought to establish a presence abroad, many companies missed a major trend fueling the tech industries in other developing countries: outsourcing. While Brazilians were busy trying to sell software packages in unfamiliar markets, developers in India were building one of the world's fastest-growing technology sectors by staying home and suiting the needs of clients half a world away.

A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and four other universities compared the information technology industries of China, India. and Brazil. "Brazil has an internal market that is at least half a decade ahead of India," the report's authors wrote. "But in terms of its export sector, it is now where India was probably about a decade ago."

It's not too late to gain lost ground. The missed opportunity, in fact, has served as something of a wakeup call to the country's tech sector. Over the past year, for example, various industry groups have come together to begin promoting Brazil as an alternative to India and other countries that have thus far attracted the most outsourcing business. With many of the same attributes as those competitors--specialized labor at a price much cheaper than that available in the United States or Europe-Brazilian software companies are rushing to get on the outsourcing band wagon.

"The industry wants to show that Brazilian know-how can also be applied on demand for companies looking for good and affordable solutions," says Claudio Seixas, executive director of partnerships at WebSoftware, a Rio de Janeiro developer of Internet software programs. Like the effort headed by CPM, WebSoftware recently joined seven other Rio companies to form an industry group seeking to drum up business outside of Brazil.

WHEN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY DECIDED TO offload its entire IT infrastructure to a third-party vendor, William Ted jumped at the chance to prove himself worthy of the project. And though he was a former software writer for the DOE, this 41-year-old chairman and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based 1 Source Consulting Inc. didn't have an easy time snagging the contract.

"I'm a believer in risk and reward, so I stepped out of my comfort zone and went for it," recalls Ted. For several months in 2003, his firm was among 100 that were interviewed for the task. Working in his favor was a DOE initiative to include more small businesses in its vendor base and a joint venture formed with Washington-based RS Information Systems Inc. Too often, people sit there in their muddled mess of a home office and wonder why they're not happy," says Bruce Wentworth, vice president of Wentworth-Levine Architect-Builder Inc. (www.wentworthlevine.com), a Silver Springs, Md.-based architect and general contractor that specializes in residential remodeling. "They'd be surprised at some of the solutions they can come up with," he adds.

Perhaps the most obvious solution is to find ways to do more with your home's existing space. You can convert a spare bedroom into an office or find niches that can be used to store space-eaters like files or supplies. But while remodeling is a good possibility, it's not the only one. You can outsource space-hungry tasks or turn to technology--a vast array of options stand ready to help you make the most out of the space you have.

Technology is probably the answer that presents the most flexibility. John Girard, vice president and research director with Gartner Group, a Stamford, Conn.-based research firm, cites the growing wealth of Web-based application service providers (ASPs--see related story), which offer free or fee-based services like accounting, collaboration, and calendar tools.

Home-based business owners can conduct research using Hoovers (www.hoovers.com), a business network site, examine clients or companies with Stockmaster (www.stockmaster.com), or have topical information pushed to their PC or wireless device with products like Alerts.com. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. "You can troll the Internet or the phone book for services that are freebies or value-adds to make yourself more efficient and come off as bigger than you really are," Girard says.

Another way to save space--and time--is to outsource repetitive tasks you might delegate to inside staff. Kerry Gleeson, president of the Institute for Business Technology (www.ibt-pep.com), a Boca Raton, Fla.-based organizational and effectiveness training firm, and author of The High-Tech Personal Efficiency Program ($17; Wiley & Sons), notes that it isn't easy to let go of some of those tasks. "Many people are perfectionists. They've been used to doing these things themselves," Gleeson says. "That's one set of skills, and another is getting other people to do things for you."

Bookkeeping and banking, preparing invoices, shipping products, and running errands are good outsourcing candidates. Print and ship collaterals or client projects using Kinkos.com; tap an Internet postage service like E-Stamp Corp., Stamps.com or Neopost Inc.; set a pick-up by FedEx--all save time and space. The question, says Gleeson, is whether you can bill more for the time you would spend doing the task than you would spend to have someone else do it for you. Mundane tasks are "very time-consuming, and it doesn't take a genius to do it," he says.

The solutions are there--if you take the time to search for them. Home Office Computing spoke with some home-based business owners who kept their home offices--and their sanity--by exploring a variety of alternatives. Here's what they said.

TECHNOLOGY EXPANDS HORIZONS

In the small Utah town of Highland, Art Berg runs Invictus Communications Inc., his home-based speaking business, with a little help from technology.

Actually, the business is run from Highland, Lehi, Springville, and West Jordan, Utah, as well as Budapest, Hungary--the cities where Berg's outside staff work, complementing his two inside employees. But, increasingly, his business is run from cyberspace.

Berg's office space is tight, with the two full-timers manning four Dell PCs, networked with three dedicated servers; two network printers; a scanner; a fax machine; and a copier in a 200-square-foot home office. He recently purchased a Canon Imagerunner 400 multifunction digital copier, fax and scanner so his staff can digitize documents and save space by "going more toward paperless," he says. Not many years ago, getting proper coverage on a homebased business was challenging and expensive. But insurance companies have now responded to homebased businesses' needs with a variety of flexible products to provide appropriate, affordable coverage. You have three basic options for insurance, says Loretta L. Worters, vice president of the Insurance Information Institute.

First, you can buy an endorsement to your existing homeowners policy. Standard homeowners policies provide minimal coverage (usually about $2,500) for business equipment and include no other business coverage. An endorsement increases your business property coverage, and the cost is nominal.

Second is an in-home business policy, which provides greater comprehensive coverage for business equipment as well as liability. Worters says some in-home business policies also cover such things as important papers and records, business interruptions and the cost of operating out of temporary locations.

Third is a business owners policy (BOP), a policy de signed for small to midsize companies. Worters recommends a BOP if you operate in multiple locations or often work at your customers' sites.

In addition to inspectingthe building; checking for lead paint, radon gas and termites; and evaluating the well water and septic system, the inspector may perform mold and air-quality tests. 1. DON'T JUDGE A HOUSE BY ITS CURB APPEAL AND WINDOW DRESSING A fresh coat of paint and a well-manicured lawn and shrubs can give any home the "buy me" look But it takes special expertise to figure out if the structure is solid.

2. DIG DEEPER Unless you do, you can't tell if there are plumbing, electrical or structural problems. And even if you tour the home a number of times, you may not be able to gauge the actual condition of the heating and air-conditioning equipment. You need a home inspector--that is, someone to certify the condition of your property and to warn you of items that could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars down the road.

3. FIND A HOME INSPECTOR Get several recommendations from your agent or friends. Most states require home inspectors to be licensed, but it's important to check them out yourself. The National Association of Home Inspectors (nahi.org) and the American Society of Home Inspectors (ashi.org) can help you find an inspector who belongs to their trade associations. Before you hire anyone, contact the local Better Business Bureau and the Department of Consumer Affairs to find out whether any complaints have been registered against the inspector or the inspector's company. Ask the inspector for references and an example of the report he prepares. And "make sure the home inspector has coverage for errors-and-commissions [a special type of insurance] so that if he or she fails to discover a defect, you can seek damages for negligence," says Ulysses "Deke" Clayborn, chair of the National Bar Association's real estate and probate law section and general counsel of the Missouri Housing Development Commission.

Remember when you're starting out you have limited budget and almost no income so why spend so much up front. Not Getting Permits or Insurance.

Don't get shut down before you start. Most towns and municipalities will require a business license or permit in order to begin your home business. Don't overlook this as a nosy neighbor, or business competitor can call in an anonymous tip and cause you a stop work order and even a healthy fine. A home business also has unique requirements such as customers coming to your home or perhaps inventory for your business stored there. When I have home improvement projects that need attention I decide how to attack them depending on the kind of project. If it’s yard work or electrical I do it myself and head off to my local Lowes or Home Depot for the widest selection and lowest prices. If it’s roofing or heating problems, depending on the situation I may head over to my local Ace Hardware store. They cost a little more, but usually have more knowledgeable help. However, if it’s plumbing – no questions asked - I call a plumber. I can’t do plumbing although I have tried and need a professional’s help.

Running an online business is not much different. We all have strengths and weaknesses and some parts of our business will require help from professionals.

However, a professional is probably going to cost money and the whole idea of starting an online business is to avoid high up front business expense. The key here is that it is a business and there will be some expense. Like any business it’s simply a matter of knowing when or where to save money.

WEB HOSTING has become very competitive and there are wide variations in prices. You can find shared hosting as inexpensive as $2.95 per month versus upwards of $20 per month for shared hosting. Why not simply pick the better price?

Using basic economics, in order for most providers to make money at these rates they are going to need to host a lot more sites on each server to break even. The net result is that less of the server is available for your site and either your site’s performance is going to be poor or you will be limited in how many visitors your site can handle.

Initially your online business is probably not going to attract a lot of visitors. So maybe, at least initially, a less expensive option is best. Maybe you’re just developing the site and want it to be online – less expense would be better.

Most people can learn HTML – it’s not that difficult. But it does take time. If you have time, then great – go for it and improve your skills in the process.

There are wide varieties of “websites in a box” which provide a complete site ready to go, or at the very least make it easier to develop and maintain the site’s content without being a “programmer”. Many of these are legitimate, and a great way to get started, just do your research first.

ONLINE MARKETING is what pulls the previous two items together into a money-making business. The knowledge to do this can be worth a lot of money, or not… some of this knowledge could be common – and fairly easy to learn. So be careful when pulling out the credit card.

If someone is promising you large amounts of income by simply buying their product – watch out! There is no “magic” or “pixie dust” available for starting an online business with.

TO SUMMARIZE all of this may seem impossible for someone new to a home business to grasp and get started with. However, it is “learnable” by most people. It just requires some time and patience.

The best way to learn initially is to join a network marketing opportunity or affiliate program with products and / or opportunities to sell. You then have their resources to learn with and typically free websites to use in promoting. The good programs are free to join. This will let you get your feet wet and learn while at the same time be professional.

Just remember whichever program you choose initially to work with, work at promoting their products and give it some time. You can’t learn (or make money) if you don’t do the work.

Have you ever considered a career teaching mothers how to use baby sign language? If you haven’t heard about baby signing, it is a system of simple sign language for use with hearing babies. It is not intended to replace speech: it is to help with the problem of communicating with babies while they are too young to be able to speak. Baby sign language has been quite well known in the United States for some time and now that it has spread to the UK it is catching on in a big way.

I had seen articles and advertising on the Internet about baby sign language but didn't think too much about it. To be honest, I dismissed the idea as some nonsensical passing fad for trendy young mothers. After all, mothers and babies have managed without sign language up to now, haven’t they? This logic is not, of course, infallible: we managed without electricity and penicillin etc. but I wouldn't want to go back to those days, so I am open to change. A couple of things have caused me to revise my opinion of baby sign language and I now appreciate how useful it can be.

My little granddaughter, at 17 months, was short on intelligible vocabulary but great on communicating via a system of gestures and noises. Unfortunately the day arrived when our amateur sign language let us down. The baby wanted something but no amount of pointing and squeaking on her part could convey to me exactly what was required. The only way I could hope to find out what she wanted was by offering things to her; I didn't know if she had a pain, wanted a drink or needed her best cuddly bunny. The harder I guessed and offered items, the more distressed she became. The end result was a miserable frustrated crying toddler and an unhappy guilt-ridden grandma. I was so upset, I felt like joining in with the tears.

Just after that unhappy incident, my daughter told me about a little boy who attends the local toddler group. He had developed a habit of cruelly squeezing the family cat. The fact that this little boy had been taught baby sign language meant that he was able to tell his mother he knew he was hurting the cat. This enabled the mother to deal with the situation without delay by teaching the child not to cause pain to other living creatures. This outcome impressed the other mothers (my daughter included) most of whom had never even heard of baby sign language. The poor old cat was probably impressed as well.

Until then I had never given serious thought to baby sign language but I realised that we already teach babies to communicate through an informal system of sign language, so there's no reason why a proper system should seem like a strange idea. One thing that causes great distress to mothers is the inability to know for sure if a baby is in pain but a signing baby has the ability to convey this. That was the point that really convinced me that baby sign language is a useful thing to learn. It looks as if my next grandchild will have the benefit of learning baby signing, that makes me very happy and I'll be taking the lessons too.

Teaching mothers how to sign is a very worthwhile job as well as being fun and I believe there will be an increasing demand for instructors as word spreads about the benefits of being able to communicate in a meaningful way with even tiny tots. From being a complete sceptic, I am now a firm believer and I have found a source of baby sign language teaching to add to my "mom specials" at my website.
